Eagle Mountain Golf Club
January 23, 2008
Eagle Mountain Golf Club is one of those great golf courses that once you play it - you could play it every day and not get tired of it. It's one of the more fun courses to play because no hole is alike and I am particularly partial to courses with hills, elevation and lots of character. Eagle Mountain has all of that and more. I challenge you to find a better golf course for the money in Scottsdale or anywhere in Arizona. When you are out on this golf course you are focused entirely on the hole you are playing while the landscape that frames it offers stark contrasts to the brilliant green of the tees, fairways and greens. On some holes I equate it to playing golf in a huge green bowl as a shot struck off line and headed for trouble will funnel back into the middle. It's a wonderful 18 hole, Par 72 golf course that's located just minutes east of Scottsdale in the rugged McDowell Mountains of Fountain Hills.
The scenery in this corner of the Sonoran desert is unique and nothing short of spectacular as the golf course dramatically winds it's way through shaded box canyons and around mountainous peaks. The relatively high elevation here offers panoramic views of the landscape that, along with superb conditioning, makes the Scott Miller-designed Eagle Mountain Golf Club a must-play on every Scottsdale golfer's play list. Miller’s desert golf masterpiece seamlessly blends awesome views of the Valley below with a challenging golf experience that has earned it's place, high on the itinerary of every golfer wanting to play golf in a high desert setting. For once, pictures of this golf course does not do it justice. If you rate your courses to include the fun factor as I do, your rating will be nothing short of the 10 I always give it. There are more difficult courses in the valley but seldom will you find one that combines challenging golf with the stunning visuals offered by Eagle Mountain.
The course at Eagle Mountain is an innovative departure from the ‘target’ style golf courses that are prevalent in this type of Sonoran Desert setting primarily due to water limitations. And, great news for golfers everywhere, it's now managed by my friends at OB Sports, a premier, Scottsdale based Golf Course Management company. It will mean great things for Eagle Mountain Golf Club and a welcome addition to OB Sports growing portfolio of fine golf courses. Eagle Mountain is a golf course that takes advantage of many interesting land features, integrating boulders, canyons and desert washes into it's design. It is a strategic, yet forgiving layout that challenges a player to make choices with regard to his or her skill level. In many locations on the golf course, long extended views of area landmarks, such as Camelback Mountain and Red Mountain, will be afforded. At 6800 yards from the tips it may not seem like a very long golf course but believe me it's more than enough to keep you interested. Come out and play it and see why everyone loves this place.
