How Scottsdale Grew Up

October 31, 2007

Once upon a time (just 20 short years ago) you could still see miles of empty desert in what is now considered the heart of Scottsdale. There were just a handful of resorts and a total of about ten good courses available to the public. Since that time, golf course construction, housing and commercial development in Scottsdale has surpassed everyone's wildest expectations. There are so many choices now and when you add the Internet to the equation, it's a wonder anyone is ever able to feel comfortable about making a choice - it has become that confusing. That's why it's critical to find a person or company that you can trust to plan a trip with you in mind, we want you coming back and that means doing the job right the first time. Here is where you can find the good guys in this business, the honest ones, the competent ones, the truthful ones and those that treat your vacation as if it were their own.

Today, sitting here at my computer with a view of the McDowell Mountains, at my residence in Scottsdale (just 60 seconds west of the Westin Kierland Resort & Spa) , there is so much inventory (courses, rooms, restaurants, condos, homes, etc) and so much competition among them that they constantly have to find ways to re-invent themselves. Back in the "old" days a golf course or a hotel would send one of their idle staff around to other courses, hotels, local businesses, passing out brochures and offers of either free golf or free room nights. There is still some of that going on today, just ask any hotel concierge, but most have wised up and found more creative ways of getting customers. If you want to be successful in this business you have to partner with those that give as much as they get, divide and conquer being a strategy of the past.
